Back in August Barneys New York reveiled their Electric Holiday Disney campagne which is set to debute on November 14. The makeover consists of Mickey Mouse being dressed in Balenciaga, Minnie Mouse in Lanvin, Goofy in Balmain, Daisy Duck in Dolce & Gabbana, Snow White in Nina Ricci, Cruella de Vil in Rick Owens, and Princess Tiana in Proenza Schouler.

The problem…. this version of Minnie is not the loveable cuddly, mouse that we all grew up with. She’s scary looking, and she doesn’t even have her trademark bow. Why would they manipulate the characters bodies to look good in a dress that know one will ever wear out in public (in real life). That is sending the wrong message to our young impressionable children. Even as adults, we all feel some type of pressure that you are not perfect unless you are this size. Why? Like the old saying goes what’s is not broken, don’t fix it….why didn’t they just keep the characters as they were? Time and time again people warn of the dangers of promoting an unrealistic body image. There are probably some who think, whats the big deal…well here it is, did you know that according to sources cited on the non-profit National Association of Anorexia and Associated Eating Disorders website:

•47% of girls in 5th-12th grade reported wanting to lose weight because of magazine pictures.

• 69% of girls in 5th-12th grade reported that magazine pictures influenced their idea of a perfect body shape.

• 42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner.

• 81% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat.

Those are some scary numbers! These are children. In the meantime hospitalizations for eating disorders in children younger than 12 years old rose by 119% from 1999 to 2006 according to a report issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published in the journal Pediatrics. That’s why we try to fight thing like this and try to get companies to understand the impression that they are making on our children. We can’t keep letting these things continue to happen.
